League Rules & Information
Hey again! Several people suggested that I put together a set of league rules that are not covered in the BCA Rules that I’ve previously distributed. A first draft is attached…
Operation of the Surf City Billiards Pool League(s)
A Scope
The following rules and statements pertain to the operation of the Surf City Billiards Pool League(s). Rules specific to games played are covered in BCA/WPA’s “Pool Billiards – The Rules of Play” Version 21.12.2007 (referred to as “BCA Rules”). Unless noted, BCA Rules are not superceded by any of the following rules.
B Schedule
A schedule of matches will be compiled by the league coordinator at the beginning of the season. If possible, teams will be scheduled to play every other team in the league once per season. The schedule will be made available online at http://www.sticktherock.com/leaguestats. Click on “Surf City Billiards” and then “Schedule”.
C Teams
Teams are comprised of four or more players. Although only four team members may play in a match, it is advisable to have more than four players on a team’s roster to avoid having insufficient players for a match or problems collecting the required fees.
D Setup
Players are allowed to begin practicing at 7:30pm. Each team is allowed one practice table. Please adhere to table assignments made by the league coordinator or Surf City Billiards management.
E Fees
$40 per team shall be submitted to the league coordinator prior to a match. The amount due will not be adjusted based on the number of players present. A score sheet will be issued after fees are collected from both teams.
F Match
A match is played by two teams of four players. Everyone on a given team will play a single rack against each member of the opposing team in the order indicated on the score sheet. Each player must play four racks (or eight racks if playing twice as per “Absence”). There are four racks in a round (column on the score sheet) and four rounds in a match.
G Absence
- A team with only one or zero players present will be treated as absent. If a team is absent, their score will not change that week. Teams that are absent more than twice in a season after their first night of play that season will be ineligible for prize money
- A team with only two or three players present will be allowed to play. Those players may play twice and/or may be given a substitute (see “Substitutes”).
- A team whose opposing team is absent will not play and their score will not change that week. If multiple teams are absent, the opposing teams will be paired by the league coordinator and, if both teams agree, will play each other in a scoring match.
H Substitutes
The league coordinator may assign substitutes to teams lacking at least four players. Teams may not refuse substitute players. Generally, substitutes shall be assigned to the team with the fewest players present.
I Handicap
- A player’s handicap value is the average number of points that he/she has earned in the current season (total points earned divided by total racks played). Handicap values for all players shall be distributed on a nightly basis by the league coordinator.
- If a player does not yet have a handicap value for the current season, he/she shall use their average rack score that night as the handicap value (total points that night divided by four).
- Player handicaps on each team shall be totaled (to three decimal places). The difference shall be determined, rounded to the nearest whole number (X.500 rounds to X+1), and added to the score of each round for the team with the lesser handicap total.
J Determination of break
The score sheets indicate which player breaks in each rack. Lagging will not be used and sections 1.2 and 3.1 of the BCA Rules shall be ignored.
K Coaching
To foster improvement of skills and strategy, players are allowed to receive coaching from other players that does not violate the BCA Rules. Coaching that results in slow play, practicing during a match, or marking the table will be treated as a foul or unsportsmanlike conduct per sections 6.15 and 6.16.
L Scoring
- The winner of a rack will receive ten points. The loser of a rack will receive a score of seven minus the number of balls in their group left on the table (between zero and seven)
- The team with the greater total (including handicap if applicable) in a given round wins that round.
- A tied match (two rounds won by each team) does not get broken.
M Tied rounds
- If opposing teams tie a single round, the players from each team with the closest handicap values shall play one additional rack to determine the winner of the round.
- If opposing teams tie two rounds, each team will receive one win and one loss.
- If opposing teams tie three rounds, each team will receive one win and one loss. Also, one additional rack will be played as described above to determine the winner of the third round.
- If the opposing teams tie all four rounds, each team will receive two wins and two losses
N Posting of Results
Results of matches will be posted weekly at http://www.sticktherock.com/leaguestats. Click on “Surf City Billiards”.
O Rankings and Prizes
Prior to the end of the season, the Surf City Billiards management will determine how prize money will be divided among the top ranked teams. At the end of the season, final standings will be determined based on the average number of rounds won. Ties will be broken based on the average number of points earned.
